Scouring for what to watch has become a thing of the past, especially when you have your trusty Digital Spy round-up of recommendations leading you into what will be a thrilling week of TV-watching.

Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden’s sharp and witty spy drama Slow Horses is back with more grit than can possibly be handled in one sitting (thank goodness it’s a weekly release), as well as a new David Tennant-led ITV drama.

There’s plenty more in store as well, with a returning dystopian thriller from Netflix as well as another offering starring James Norton (from the boss of SAS Rogue Heroes, no less).

The Hack

David Tennant stars in The Hack, which ITV has dubbed an “explosive” drama. The seven-part series is set to focus on the phone hacking scandal involving the now-defunct newspaper News of the World.

From creator Jack Thorne (Adolescence), the exciting ensemble cast also features Robert Carlyle, Toby Jones, Eve Myles and Katherine Kelly.

The Hack will be available to watch from Wednesday 24 September at 9pm on ITV1, with the show also available on ITVX beforehand.

Slow Horses, season 5

The quick-witted spy drama is back with more dry quips and dire circumstances as the dysfunctional team of MI5 agents, led by their odious boss Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), have a new crisis on their hands.

“Sinister forces are trying to bring down the country,” said Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) in the trailer, “what are we going to do?”

Well, with Slough House also declared under lockdown, the chances are, fight amongst themselves, before figuring out a way to break the rules and break themselves out to investigate… What fun it shall be.

Slow Horses, season 5 will be available to watch on Wednesday 24 September on Apple TV+.

Cosy crime drama fans are in for a treat, because Sister Boniface Mysteries is back for season four this week. Of course, this will mean more scooter riding and crime-solving from nun Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson).

The eight-part series means that eight new mysteries will plague the village of Great Slaughter Cotswolds, and Sister Boniface will, as ever, make offer her assistance to the village’s detective inspector Sam Gillespie (Max Brown), DS Felix Livingstone (Jerry Iwu) and PC Peggy Button (Ami Metcalf).

Sister Boniface Mysteries series 4 will be available to watch from Friday 26th September at 9pm on U&Drama.

Viewers are about to get a closer look at the Guinness family, with a little embellishment of course, as the inspired historical drama cracks into the lives of the members of the famous dynasty.

House of Guinness picks up in 19th century Dublin and New York, set after the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, “the man responsible for the extraordinary success of the Guinness brewery,” so says the synopsis.

The impact of his will sets into motion a chain of events that will rock his four adult children – Arthur (Anthony Boyle), Edward (Louis Partridge), Anne (Emily Fairn), and Ben (Fionn O’Shea) – as well as those around them. The series also stars James Norton, most recently seen in the BBC’s epic period drama King & Conqueror.

House of Guinness will be available to watch from Thursday 25 September on Netflix.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, season 7

“Fairy godmother Ru has spoken!” (at least according to Instagram), and now it’s time to “dust off your heels” because it’s the time to be dazzled by season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, starting this week.

The season will see 12 brand new contestants battle it out to become the UK’s next Drag Superstar, and the new line-up includes Sally TM, Silllexa Diction, Catrin Feelings, Paige Three, Tayris Mongardi, Pasty, Nyongbella, Viola, Chai T Grande, Bonnie Ann Clyde, Bones and Elle Vosque.

Head judge RuPaul will also be joined by celebrity guest judges, which will include Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Sugababes’ Mutya Buena, Girls Aloud’s Nadine Coyle and Cheaters’ Susan Wokoma.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, season 7 will be available to watch from Thursday 25 September on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.

The synopsis promises that Netflix’s new limited series, starring Toni Collette and Mae Martin, will be “a thrilling and genre-bending” experience.

Set in the seemingly idyllic town of Tall Pines, police officer Alex Dempsey (Martin) and his pregnant wife Laura (Sarah Gadon) settle into their new environment, but quickly discover something is very unsettling about their town. At the heart of this discomfort is an enigmatic youth counsellor Evelyn (Collette) who may not be the friendly face she appears to be.

Wayward is available to watch from Thursday 25 September on Netflix.

The Savant

“The tense and thrilling series follows an undercover investigator known as ‘The Savant’ (Jessica Chastain) as she infiltrates online hate groups in an effort to stop domestic extremists before they act,” the official synopsis reads.

The eight-part series has also been described as “gripping” by the streamer, and the cast also features Nnamdi Asomugha, Cole Doman, Jordana Spiro and Trinity Lee Shirley.

The Savant is available to watch from Friday 26 September on Apple TV+.

After more than a two-year wait, Alice in Borderland finally returns with what is set up to be an even more gruelling ride for Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya).

The now-married contestants, who scraped their way out of the parallel version of Tokyo last season, are sucked back in and must face new and more sadistically dangerous games to earn their freedom.

Their new quest aligns them with new players, and all must enter the mysterious Joker stage in order to return to the original world. Who will survive the ordeal and who will be lost has already been decided, all you have to do is watch.
