Emmerdale aired the beginning of its new dark bullying storyline after Jacob Gallagher was continually berated by his boss.

In tonight’s episode, Doctor Todd returned, with Caroline Harker reprising the role for a new storyline exploring workplace bullying and power dynamics.

Viewers will know that Doctor Todd first appeared on the soap last January as a mentor to trainee doctor Jacob.

In yesterday’s episode, Jacob hinted at trouble at work while speaking to his partner, Sarah Sugden, on the phone.

Throughout tonight’s episode, Dr Todd repeatedly berated Jacob, ruthlessly criticising him in the workplace.

Kicking things off, Dr Todd instructed Jacob to take the lead after Laurel Thomas was rushed to the hospital with a serious head injury.

She was quick to snap at Jacob, saying: “Come on, come on. You know what you’re doing.”

When Richard took over, Jacob watched on, with Dr Todd saying: “Got a good enough view? Mind if I have a look?”

Later, Dr Todd said to Jacob: “It’s going to be a very long night if you don’t get your brain into gear. Flapping around like a first-year is totally unacceptable”

After Jacob explained that memories of his mum’s death triggered him, Dr Todd said he needed to be able to cope with whatever happened in the emergency department.

Following an altercation between Bear Wolf and Jacob, Dr Todd said she had called the police and asked Jacob to go for a quick chat.

In the chat, she said: “Perhaps you’d like to explain why you put yourself in such a dangerous situation?”

Dr Todd told Jacob off, saying: “For a supposedly intelligent young man, you really are remarkably stupid. You cannot let personal relationships affect patient care.”

She threatened to have Jacob removed from the course, telling him he would have to give a statement to the police.

At the end of the shift, Dr Todd seemed to change her tune, telling Richard and Jacob to have a break and get a cup of coffee.

She managed to get one dig in before the pair walked off, saying: “I don’t want any of my students burning out. Or in your case, setting fire to yourself.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
