EastEnders set up a huge week after Peter Beale and Lauren Branning’s relationship took another twist following a surprise meeting with a new face, all before a tantalising cliffhanger surprised the Beale family.

The pair have had a rocky time lately, with Peter risking their entire future as he shared a drink with newcomer Demi. Lauren’s cousin Penny caught wind of the incident, and told Peter to come clean.

Fearing that their relationship could be over, Peter delayed the decision, though Lauren eventually found out. Much to his surprise, she barely flinched when she learned about Demi, leaving Peter to wonder if the spark between them had totally gone.

Thursday’s (25 September) episode began as Penny questioned Lauren over her stance, though she explained that she ultimately trusted Peter. Penny, however, wasn’t happy, and arranged to meet Demi in the café.

Peter, meanwhile, confided in Ian and Kathy that he was perturbed by Lauren’s reaction – or lack of one – in regards to the situation with Demi, though Ian assured him that everything was okay.

Peter’s mood soured when he heard Lauren and Penny laughing with Demi at their meeting, with the trio seemingly in good spirits despite some initial awkwardness on Penny’s part. Lauren, however, said the whole situation was “funny”.

Despite Lauren being calm about the incident, Peter incorrectly assumed that they were maliciously laughing at his expense, and stormed out of the café before the group could explain themselves.

After Lauren returned home, she explained to Peter that she didn’t “hate” the idea of another woman taking a shine to her partner, though she added that these feelings didn’t diminish any love that she felt.

After she shared that the recent “excitement” was nice to have, Peter explained to Ian and Kathy that his next step was planning a “spontaneous” wedding, though they didn’t look too thrilled by the idea…

The cliffhanger sets up next week’s episodes nicely, with Peter’s surprise plan being thrown into chaos as his bride-to-be is shocked by his move, with their relationship seemingly at a crossroads.

“Lauren does a runner on their big day,” our EastEnders source explains. “She already has huge doubts about marrying Peter, and now he’s completely blindsided her with these plans. It’s clear these two aren’t on the same page.”

EastEnders airs on Mondays-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
