The national chain, which has more than 450 gyms across the country, has confirmed it will open in Haddington within a matter of months.

Planning permission was given to transform a section of the town’s former Aldi store, off Whittingehame Drive, into a gym earlier this year.

Now, it has been confirmed that PureGym plan to move into the complex, which is already home to Screwfix and Toolstation.

A spokesperson for PureGym said: “We’re thrilled to be opening a brand new gym in Haddington this summer.

“PureGym Haddington will be a fantastic addition to the local area, offering members 24/7 access to high-quality equipment, all through our flexible, low-cost memberships.

“Whether members are looking to build strength, improve their fitness or stay active, PureGym Haddington will provide a welcoming space to turn up, train and feel great.

“We look forward to welcoming members through the doors later this year!”

Aldi moved from the site and into its new home at Haddington Retail Park five years ago.

Since then, the building has been split into three.

No objections were made with East Lothian Council when the plans for the remaining section of the former supermarket site were lodged.

At that time, Abercromby Investments Limited, who submitted the plans, highlighted what was planned for the “high-quality fitness facility”.

They said: “The proposed gym will include a range of cardiovascular and strength equipment, together with gym classes and personal training services.

“As with many modern gyms, the proposed facility at Haddington Trade Park will operate on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week, providing access to the whole community, including those who work shift patterns such as key workers.”

According to PureGym, personal trainers will be available for one-to-training, while there will also be special discounts for being a PureGym member.

They said that PureGym Haddington would offer “a welcoming space to turn up, train and feel great”.

They added: “By focusing on the equipment and space you need most, the gym creates an effective, accessible environment for everyday training.

“With all the kit you need for a great workout, we’ve prioritised dedicated workout zones, so this gym is designed around gym-floor training rather than classes.”

Already, details about the upcoming move are being posted on the group’s website at https://www.puregym.com/gyms/haddington
