Directed by Mexican filmmaker Michelle Garza Cervera, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle will feel “very different” to the original, which is widely regarded as a ’90s classic.

Joining ScreenRant for an interview, Cervera clarified that her film isn’t exactly a remake. “We kept the plot, we kept some of the dynamics [of] having a 10-year-old girl, a baby, [and] the ages of the characters, but the whole thing, the city [and] the themes particularly are very different,” she said.
Unlike the 1992 version, which was set in Seattle, Cervera’s reimagining will take place in Los Angeles, while delving into some of the characters’ backstories.
“The motivations for revenge and the way the conflict grows in the film … it’s particular to this new story and characters,” she began.

Cervera also noted that the film is “pretty dark”, adding, “It puts the characters more in grey areas, and there’s a mirroring thing between the antagonist and the protagonist.”
Echoing this sentiment in an interview with People, Cervera explained, “We build a whole different kind of thriller. It’s actually more of a slow burn.” Reflecting on Maika Monroe’s performance as Polly, the filmmaker raved, “She brings a very evil, contained tone to the film that I’m super proud of.”
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle will premiere on 22 October. Fans in the US can tune in on Hulu, while UK viewers can tune in on Disney+.
