It was Nigel Bates’ big day in court today (November 10) on EastEnders with him due to face the music after causing a car accident last month. Due to his worsening dementia, Nigel previously tried to reclaim his independence by taking his recently sold car on a joyride.

But he became overwhelmed and distracted, and accidentally drove the car into newcomer Jasmine Fisher, with Gina Knight also injured in the crash.

Julie’s been preparing for her terminally-ill husband getting a jail sentence, and the day of the court case didn’t get off to a good start when she realised she’d sent Nigel’s ‘lucky tie’ to the dry cleaners.

Despite trying to get it back before the hearing, there was no luck. Instead, the couple had a heart-to-heart on Arthur’s memorial bench.

Nigel shared with her that he could remember the unveiling they had for the bench back in 1997, naming all the people that attended.

Julie tried to talk to him about the hearing but he instead shared facts about horror movies. However, he then stopped and told Julie that he knew what was happening and assured her everything would be fine.

“Whatever happens today in the court, I love you, and nothing is going to change that, no judge, no court, no one,” he told his wife.

When they later arrived in court alongside Phil Mitchell, they were greeted by lawyer Ritchie, who explained there had been a change of plan.

She explained to Phil and Julie that the case had been dropped, saying: “They’ve taken a proper look at Nigel’s medical assessment and decided he’s not responsible for his actions.”

But Nigel overheard her and looked downcast as the lawyer added: “As far as they’re concerned, he’s mentally incapable.”

Nigel, Julie and Phil headed to the cafe, with Julie making plans to celebrate the fact Nigel won’t be going to prison.

But Nigel was still reeling from what Ritchie had said, and was particularly affected by the words “mentally incapable”, as it made him realise just how bad his condition is.

EastEnders airs on Mondays – Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
