Following its release on Netflix last month, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen has been the series that horror fans are talking about. With its blend of genre tropes and the notion of doomed love, it’s easy to see why Haley Z Boston’s project has been a success.

For the uninitiated, the story follows Rachel (Camila Morrone) and Nicky (Adam DiMarco), an engaged couple who are seemingly on the luxurious journey to the happily-ever-after of married life.

The tables turn, however, when a catalogue of strange things happen in the lead-up to their big day. As the incidents become more terrifying by the day, the pair question if the other party is their soulmate after all.

Featuring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ted Levine in supporting roles, the horror series has gone down a treat with viewers, as it comfortably reached the top 10 in Netflix’s trending TV chart following its release on 26 March.

It also garnered acclaim from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting an impressive approval rating of 89% from 53 reviews. All in all, we can say that Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen has been a success for the streamer.

The burning question remains, however – will Netflix greenlight a second season (and perhaps more)? Well, here’s everything you need to know about a potential follow-up – including thoughts from the creator and showrunner themselves.

The rather sad answer to that question is currently no – but this could all change in the near future. While we don’t exactly know what Netflix is thinking, Boston has expressed optimism that a follow-up could be on the cards.

The possibilities in the genre are endless, and this series is certainly no different given some of its themes. Though we won’t give anything away regarding plot (read our Endings Explained feature if you want that), Rachel and Nicky’s journey seemed to be complete.

Boston seemingly agrees with that sentiment, as they previously explained to Tudum that the final scene involving the central pair constituted a “perfect ending” for the not-so-happy couple.

Naturally, this opens up the possibility of another story being told in the same narrative universe, and Boston was very much open to the idea of the show becoming an anthology series akin to American Horror Story and Beef.

“That would be a great opportunity,” Boston said in an interview with Variety. “This story is very personal to me. It came from a real fear of mine, something I was using to explore my own fears. I’ve thought about the show as a potential anthology.

“Whatever that next existential fear is, I’d need to figure out what to explore there. Horror, to me, runs deep. It allows you to explore taboo subjects and externalise internal fears. I have a lot of fears, so I’m sure there’s more to mine.”

Is Rachel and Nicky’s story complete in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen?

Maybe! Boston opined that the pair had a “perfect ending” at least in terms of the themes of their journey, and, for reasons we won’t get into here, DiMarco’s Nicky seemed to have completed his arc.

For other reasons we won’t get into, Rachel’s story still has plenty of other avenues to explore, and Morrone told Tudum that it would be “interesting” to travel those routes – so maybe there are more opportunities!

How long would it take to release season 2 of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen?

Truthfully, we don’t know, but the landscape of TV means that episodes unfortunately take longer to film nowadays. While we don’t expect three-year gaps like those for Stranger Things, we’d wager it would take a couple of years to film if it was greenlit.
