Coronation Street spoilers follow for Monday’s (6 April) episode on ITVX and YouTube, which hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet.

Carl Webster was caught out on Coronation Street again, only this time he left his mother, Debbie, shocked. With the schemer up to his old tricks again, how did he manage to annoy his family this time around?

After months of drama which has included discovering his true parentage, having an affair with his half-brother’s wife and some criminality via some forged MOTs, it’s been a busy time for Carl.

His latest arc has seen him accrue debt, which he owes to dodgy car dealer Fiona. In a bid to pay off the charge, he has schemed to extort the money from Debbie, a move which comes with a great amount of risk.

Today’s episode of the ITV soap began with Debbie and her husband, Ronnie, returning to work at the hotel. After Ronnie left and she gave an instruction to Ryan Connor, she transferred the money to Carl.

Carl later rushed to Debbie, and said he needed the money as soon as possible. Debbie explained that it was going through some money laundering checks, and he would have to wait to receive it.

Ronnie overheard the conversation, and asked why Debbie was lending Carl money again. She explained that it was for Fiona, and this alarmed Ronnie even more given his previous distrust of Carl.

When he heard that the amount was £10,000, he grew even more anxious, though Debbie assured him that Carl would work to pay off his new debt. Despite her reasoning, Ronnie didn’t seem convinced.

Carl soon got to work, though he was increasingly smarmy as he took orders from Ryan. Feeling confident from having some money on the way, Carl said that Debbie would put him first over everything, including the hotel and herself.

Ryan still couldn’t get to grips with Carl’s demeanour and threatened to quit, though she offered to up his wages. He branded Carl a “snake”, and said that Ronnie had informed him about the arrangement with the £10,000.

There was a twist, however, as Ronnie arrived following a discussion with Fiona. He informed Debbie that the debt was only £5000, meaning Carl had attempted to pocket some funds for himself.

This devastated Debbie, who said she was “done” with Carl following his latest act of deceit. Explaining that this was very much the straw that broke the camel’s back, will the mother-son duo ever be on good terms again?

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
