HBO’s award-winning comedy Hacks is airing its fifth and final season this month, with the episodes set to premiere next week in the UK. But while fans will be disappointed to see the series come to an end, a reboot could be on the horizon.

Speaking with Variety, the show’s bosses Paul W Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky were asked whether the story was truly finished. Though they didn’t give a solid answer, they certainly teased the possibility of a return in the near future.

“We would never say never,” the trio unanimously agreed. “We love these characters, we love this world, we love everybody in the ensemble. Right now we feel good about going out without overstaying our welcome — but you won’t have to twist my arm.”

The showrunners also confirmed they have a new project that’s currently being developed at HBO – though they’re keeping the details under wraps for now.

Hacks follows the messy but heartwarming relationship between legendary comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young collaborator Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Despite a successful career in stand-up, Deborah struggles to keep her act relevant to modern audiences.

Meanwhile, comedy writer Ava finds herself shunned from the industry due to her arrogant nature. The pair are thrown together and their stark differences soon lead to a promising partnership, both on and off stage.

“I can’t think of a relationship like Ava’s and Deborah’s that has been in a movie or on television,” said Smart. “I think the writers just seem to outdo themselves and raise the bar every single solitary season. This may be my favourite season.”

The series began back in 2021, at which time Einbinder was only 24 years old. “I feel like I grew up and became a human being on this show,” she shared. “It’s a whole Saturn Return and a half.”

Speaking about how Deborah and Ava’s bond has strengthened over the last five years, Einbinder said: “It’s so fun, and we love sparring too, but it’s nice to be on the same team.”

The actor was also asked about her views on a reboot, confirming she would be quick to sign up. “Of course I would. Any excuse to be with my people,” she replied.

Hacks season 5 premieres on 17 April on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
