There will be a major change for The White Lotus in its upcoming fourth season, which recently began filming. As per Variety, the upcoming chapter will see a slight alteration to the trusted formula.

Mike White’s acclaimed anthology series serves as a satire of class, containing healthy doses of tragicomedy and mystery in equal measure. Each season takes place at a resort from the titular hotel chain, with guests and staff being the core characters.

After taking place in Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand respectively across its first three seasons, the next saga has been somewhat grounded in a time and place as the action occurs during the Cannes Film Festival.

According to Variety, the next instalment of the comedy-drama will be set across two hotels – Airelles Château de la Messardière as the White Lotus du Cap, and the Hôtel Martinez as the White Lotus Cannes – in a slight twist to the formula.

Previously, the story from each season had only been told from the confines of one hotel and its ground, but the next journey will be spread across two. Filming is taking place in St Tropez, Monaco and Paris, with the story being set in the French Riviera.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival, the 79th in its history, will take place from 12-23 May. Production will reportedly take place on the ground at the event, so we can perhaps expect some red carpet action.

Furthermore, the star-studded cast for the fourth season has been confirmed, with the line-up including Helena Bonham Carter, Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Marissa Long and Chris Messina.

They will be joined by Alexander Ludwig, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnetzer and Laura Smet.

“The fourth season will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival,” reads the synopsis for the highly-anticipated season.

The White Lotus airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK and streams on HBO Max.
