CULLMAN, Ala. – Local teacher Christina Watson opened Fit Society in October. Watson, a biology teacher at Hanceville High School, has spent several years coaching and said she plans to devote herself full time to her fitness center.

“I have loved fitness my whole life,” Watson shared. “My mom really got that into me when I was little.”

In her youth, she said, she played sports and devoted herself to athletics. At 19, she injured her back.

“I didn’t want to have spinal surgery at 19. I powered through that injury until three years ago when my L4 came out of my spinal column,” she explained. “I had spinal fusion and could not move for the first time in my life. When I was able to move again, my doctor told me I couldn’t go back to my normal life unless I got my core strength back. That introduced me to Pilates.”

Watson was familiar with Pilates in her college years, but being re-introduced to it for her healing changed her experience entirely.

“I got my whole life back, then I turned 40 and decided it was time to start my passion project,” she said. “I’ve been a teacher and a basketball coach my whole career. I actually resigned from basketball last year. From there I got this building in July and got things going.”

Watson spoke about how inspirational it is to hear from individuals she works with. “You know – they  have been able to fall in love with moving again! A lot of pain in their hips has gone away, and with that regained core strength it doesn’t hurt them to walk around anymore.”

She stressed that Fit Society is more than just Pilates – it’s for everyone. Her goal is to offer the full spectrum of wellness to all. She is currently working on developing a recovery center on the top floor come January. This will include recovery assistance, massages and more.

“We are going to have cardio components as well,” she said. “Spin classes, hot yoga… and right now we are amplifying our weight room.”

Fit Society also offers nutrition coaching. It currently offers a six-week program to help people succeed in the gym and the kitchen. Fit Society trainers hold nutrition certifications so customers can be properly advised throughout their health and wellness journeys. Watson advised that while there are more in-depth packages, Fit Society also has several free nutrition coaching options.

There are a variety of membership options and credit bundles.
