Scream spoilers follow.
Scream star Skeet Ulrich has confirmed that the plan for the franchise’s new trilogy was originally very different to how the story played out. Scream 5, officially titled Scream, saw Ulrich reprising his role as Billy Loomis – one of the Ghostface killers who died in the first movie.
In the fifth and sixth instalments, Billy appears as an hallucination in order to help his daughter Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera). According to Ulrich, Billy’s appearances were supposedly part of a “three-picture arc” for Sam to become the next Ghostface in the upcoming Scream 7.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ulrich shut down speculation about whether he’d be making a comeback for Scream 7, saying things “didn’t pan out”.
“I’ve been vocal about that. I’m not. When we talked about coming back for 5, it was a three-picture arc for Billy Loomis to slowly turn his daughter into the killer.

“Obviously, those things didn’t pan out, given certain things that happened. But, no, I know nothing about the seventh.”
The franchise has been through some big changes in recent years, beginning with the departure of directing duo Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who took the reins during Scream 5 and 6 but faced scheduling issues for Scream 7.

Meanwhile, Barrera was axed from the series reportedly due to comments she made about the Israel-Palestine conflict on social media, with Jenna Ortega leaving her role as Sam’s sister Tara Carpenter following her co-star’s exit.
When new director Christopher Landon also left the project, original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson rejoined the team.
The plot for the seventh movie will now focus on Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who was absent for Scream 6, and will see her daughter Tatum (Isabel May) and husband Mark (Joel McHale) facing off against yet another sinister Ghostface.
Scream 7 is released in cinemas on February 27, 2026.
