Avatar: Fire and Ash spoilers follow.

Avatar actor Stephen Lang has addressed the future for him and his character Colonel Miles Quaritch following three films of playing the franchise’s baddie, and the events of the newly-released Fire and Ash.

In James Cameron’s third film, Quaritch seemingly sacrifices himself to save his son Spider at the climax of the final battle.

It seems like it could be a fitting conclusion to his character arc, but we never see his dead body. He also died once already, at the end of the first film, and his consciousness was transferred into an artificial Na’vi body.

So what’s going on? Is this another fake-out, or just the next step in Quaritch’s story?

As far as Lang is concerned, he’s definitely keen for more.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the actor stated: “Presuming there is another stage to Quaritch’s journey, I would certainly be up for taking it.

“This has been an extremely rewarding project to be part of. And whatever happens, Avatar is part of my life for the rest of my life.

“But to continue to work with this team, to continue to work with Jim Cameron, and actors of this quality would be something that I would be delighted to continue on doing.”

It should be noted that Lang was previously confirmed for the fourth and fifth Avatar films, should they happen.

The success of Fire and Ash will determine if there are any more films, and whether that happens or not, Lang hopes that fans take something personal from the film.

“I hope that their expectations are not only fulfilled but surpassed in terms of the story, in terms of their relationships with these characters,” he said. “And in terms of, I suppose, the messages or the themes.

“Put it that way, the themes that are being explored and massaged throughout the Avatar saga. Because they’re really such ennobling themes in the end. They celebrate the best in humanity.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is out in cinemas now. The other two can be streamed via Disney+. Avatar 4 is scheduled for release on 21 December 2029.
