Clarice, the horror crime drama which first aired in 2021, is now trending on Prime Video in the UK, after being added to the streaming service last week. The 13-part series is a spinoff from The Silence of the Lambs – widely considered to be a masterpiece – and follows the central character of Clarice Starling one year after the events of the 1988 novel and the film.

The logline for Clarice details how the show “explores the untold personal story of Agent Clarice Starling” as she returns to work. Here, the role of the FBI agent – previously and iconically portrayed on the big screen by Jodie Foster – is taken on by Rebecca Breeds.

Clarice, which was created by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, only got one season, and received mixed reviews from critics and viewers. Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes saw Breeds’ performance praised for being “compelling” and a “standout”, and the show was described by one outlet (via Starburst) as “a good, atmospheric police procedural with strong performances”.

The Post NZ, however, branded it an “insult to the memory of one of the great movies of the late 20th century”, and USA Today said it felt “like a cheap knockoff that squanders its source material”.

Viewers on IMDb also seemed divided. One fan called it “a terrific readaptation of an American classic”, urging more to watch it. Another said they found the first episode to be “intense” and “gripping”, adding that they were “in for the season”.

Others were quick to draw comparisons with Hannibal, a three-season thriller series starring Mads Mikkelsen that was another spinoff from the franchise.

“It’s not as great as Hannibal but it’s definitely great,” one argued.

Clarice is currently sitting at number five in Prime Video’s UK top 10, with Sophie Turner’s Steal – released yesterday – already taking the number two spot, just behind Fallout season two.

The Silence of the Lambs’ acclaimed 1991 movie – which saw Sir Anthony Hopkins star with Foster – remains the only horror to have won Best Picture at the Oscars. Although this may change very soon, as Ryan Coogler’s Sinners – which has just hit an impressive new record with 16 nominations at the 2026 Oscars – is up for Best Picture.
