Comedian and podcaster Em Rusciano is out of hospital after announcing she was diagnosed with a “rare” condition.

The 47-year-old revealed on social media this week she was taken to Melbourne’s Austin Hospital after getting a muscle injury while doing pull ups.

While it might sound like just a simple type of exercise, it caused her to develop rhabdomyolysis.

The Cleveland Clinic said the rare condition can be life-threatening, and arises when an injury causes the muscles to break down, which can lead to muscle death.

It can also release toxins into your circulation system and kidneys as the muscles break down, causing kidney damage.

But Em was filmed by her daughter Marchella walking out of hospital on Tuesday.

What happened to Em Rusciano?

The star, who got her claim to fame off the back of Australian Idol, was seen leaving the hospital in an oversized green shirt with sparkling cherries on the front and red sweat pants.

She smiled and waved at the camera, appearing to be in good spirits despite the harrowing ordeal.

Em revealed the extent of the condition in a post on social media earlier this week.

“I’m in hospital. I’m OK,” she told her 243,000 followers.

“The reason is so ridiculous and on brand. I’m the talk of the Austin, seriously if this was an episode of House I’d be the main story line.”

She then revealed that she had been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis after her workout.

“My biceps are still pretty swollen and I can’t straighten my arms yet. My CK numbers are still in the 20,000s and normal numbers are 500,” she said.

“Creatine kinase (CK) is an enzyme found in the heart, brain and skeletal muscles, with elevated levels indicating muscle damage, disease or strain.”

Em still appeared to be cracking jokes and kept things light while she was in the hospital, with her daughter Marchella sat beside her.

Her daughter showed what she was doing on her phone and quoted the infamous line said by Patrick Dempsey’s Grey’s Anatomy character before every surgery.

“It’s a beautiful day to save lives,” she said.

However, once she was discharged, Em and Marchella were seen hanging out at home watching the 20th anniversary of Hannah Montana together.

Em even showed off her vocal skills, singing the famous song The Climb from the Hannah Montana movie.
