Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle is thrown into another life-or-death ordeal next week, when he’s hit by a speeding car on a country road.

The heart-stopping moment comes just as Cain is feeling positive for the first time in months following a meet-up with his wife Moira.

He and his incarcerated missus finally get a moment alone after Dr Liam Cavanagh orchestrates a secret rendezvous at the hospital for them. But no sooner has Cain seen a bit of light amid all the darkness, fate twists the knife when he’s mown down by a mysterious motorist…

“One minute Cain’s on the phone to Moira, the next minute he’s knocked down and left for dead,” reveals our Emmerdale insider.

“In that split-second, everything changes again for Cain, and the long list of worries he’s already got is about to get even longer. But first things first, he needs the emergency services – and fast.”

Fortunately for Cain, his son Kyle stumbles upon the scene as Moira frantically tries to work out what’s happened while listening on the other end of the phone. She’s in pieces, having realised that something terrible is unfolding at Cain’s end, but too far away to help.

It feels particularly cruel as just the day before, she and Cain are finally able to be together after months of enforced separation. However, the reasons behind the reunion are bittersweet as the opportunity comes thanks to both having serious health challenges.

“Moira is having an MRI scan to check her brain tumour status,” continues our spy. “There’s a changing room for patients, so Liam arranges for Cain to be there when Moira goes in, and they share some private time together. You can’t blame them for snatching any moment they get.”

For Cain, it’s a chance to finally to be vulnerable with Moira about his surgery, and what that might mean for their intimacy levels. They’ve always been a very passionate couple, but prostate cancer treatment can have an impact on that part of a patient’s life, and Cain is terrified about what it might mean.

“These are the conversations that Cain and Moira could have had together if she weren’t banged up for crimes she didn’t commit,” explains our source.

“Moira is quick to reassure him that they’ve gone through so much together and she is by his side, now and forever. Moira truly believes that if they have each other, they can face whatever life throws at them.”

However, Moira may not get the chance to keep that promise as Cain lies in the road and Kyle panics. Even if he’d been hit while fully fit and in peak condition, this accident could be deadly.

But Cain’s already battling cancer and facing an uncertain future. One thing’s for sure, the person who mowed him down is going to be enemy number one for the Dingle family if they’re found out. But who could be responsible for such a crime – and why didn’t they stop to call an ambulance?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
