After a little bit of a wait, we now finally have confirmation that filming has begun on Man of Tomorrow. The upcoming film serves as a sequel to 2025’s Superman, and continues the adventures of the superhero in the newly-rebooted DC Universe.
Taking to Instagram on Monday (20 April), writer-director James Gunn posted a photo of a chessboard from the set while confirming that filming was under way, writing: “From the set of #ManofTomorrow. Shooting now.”
Naturally, there were lots of excited fans in the comment section, with several expressing hope that the film will deliver on the promise of its predecessor; but what do we actually know about Man of Tomorrow so far?
When is the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow released?
Jessica Miglio//Warner Bros.
Man of Tomorrow isn’t actually that far away in the grand scheme of things, with a release pencilled in for 9 July 2027. With Superman being released worldwide in July 2025, this marks a two-year turnaround if it comes to fruition.
With other DC properties such as The Batman: Part II potentially being released over five years after its predecessor, a two-year turnaround is a remarkably quick production cycle given the nature of the industry, especially with it being a major blockbuster.
This is perhaps partly due to Gunn’s wider role in DC Studios, where he is the co-CEO and co-chairperson alongside Peter Safran. Having oversight on the whole franchise can only be a good thing for Gunn’s personal projects, and we’re seeing this with Man of Tomorrow.
Who’s coming back for Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow?
Warner Bros.
While plot details for Man of Tomorrow are largely being kept under wraps, we do know that Superman will be battling arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. This will see David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult come face-to-face again, as they reprise their respective roles.
Also returning are Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo and Isabela Merced, who play Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Hawkgirl. Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi and Sara Sampaio, meanwhile, are coming back as Green Lantern, Mister Terrific and Eve Teschmacher.
Frank Grillo is likely to have an expanded role as Rick Flag Sr, while the new cast members include Lars Eidinger, Aaron Pierre and Adria Arjona. Eidinger is portraying supervillain Brainiac, Pierre is another Green Lantern while Arjona is rumoured to be playing Maxima.
