One competitor manages to avoid the woman at the last moment, but a Dutch cyclist in orange behind them collides head-on with the mobility scooter.
The impact flips the rider over his handlebars, sending him through the air before landing on the road. Several cyclists behind him then pile up and crash into one another.
The race was halted after the woman veered onto the course mid-competition. Footage shared online by a spectator showed a number of riders sprawled across the tarmac, visibly shaken.
Despite the chaos, some competitors continued past the scene as they raced toward the finish line.
Amazingly, all the cyclists taken out in the crash escaped without serious injury, according to the Telegraph.
The Dutchman, Paul Vriesman, posted on Instagram saying he wasn’t too injured despite what it looked like.
“Nasty crash but it looks like I got away with it relatively well and with no major injuries.
“Not the way I was hoping to finish my first week back to racing after a few months of rehab though …
Vriesman said it was sad to have a “did not finish” next to his name because of “an old lady who was just living in her own world”.
Amazingly, all the cyclists taken out in the crash escaped without serious injury, according to the Telegraph.
Cycling commentator Los Brolin urged spectators to stay behind the designated sidelines.
“Even a small step onto the road can have serious consequences at these speeds. This was not even the first incident of this kind during the race. Junior racing is already dangerous enough without spectators making it even more dangerous,” Brolin wrote on social media.
