New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi noted on its website that due to an earlier incident, drivers could expect delays as traffic began to ease in the area.
A Herald reporter at the scene earlier said a police eagle helicopter was overhead as police officers searched the motorway embankment.
The incident caused temporary traffic disruption on the SH16 St Lukes onramp.
Police have thanked drivers for their patience.
