Monroe, ITV’s hit medical drama starring James Nesbitt, has landed on Netflix.

Hailed as “slick” and “sharply written” (via The Guardian), the series follows Gabriel Monroe (Nesbitt), a skilled and unconventional neurosurgeon.

As he takes on a myriad of perplexing cases, Monroe contends with dramas – both medical and personal – after splitting from his ex-wife, Anna (Susan Lynch), while attempting to maintain a relationship with his son Nick (Perry Millward).

Rounding out the cast, Sarah Parish, Tom Riley, Neil Pearson and Manjinder Virk also star. Meanwhile, Peter Bowker, the hit screenwriter behind World on Fire (2019) and Ralph & Katie (2022), is billed as the show’s creator.

Monroe, which spawned two seasons, received mostly positive reviews. Posting on IMDb, one viewer noted that it was “Not subtle, not original, but hugely compelling viewing”.

Echoing this sentiment, a second agreed: “It may be lacking a tad in subtlety and originality, and the characters are slightly clichéd, but man, did I love Monroe. It was a compelling, well-acted and well-written series that also does well in conveying any complexities and difficulties in the profession.”

Everything about this drama is top-notch, from the writing, the acting, to the highly entertaining incidental music,” added a third. “All in all, it is great entertainment – exactly what I want from a TV series,” declared a fourth.

Speaking exclusively with Digital Spy, Nesbitt opened up about Monroe’s struggles in season one.

“The work-life balance is pretty imbalanced, really. In a way, his home is the hospital. They’re so committed, these people, and so driven. I mean, they’re kind of fanatic about what they do in a sense,” the actor explained.

“They spend so much time in the hospital, they’re often rarely at home, and I think if you look at the divorce rate of surgeons, it’s pretty high.”

Nesbitt added, “His life is in disarray, but meanwhile, he’s putting lives back together, and I think that conflict makes for great drama.”

Seasons one and two of Monroe are available to stream on Netflix in the UK.
