Leading the series, Saldaña stars as CIA operative Joe McNamara, who, after losing a fellow Lioness, recruits Marine Cruz Manuelos (Oliveira) to gather intelligence on the terrorist financier, Asmar Ali Amrohi.

As she struggles to balance her top-secret professional life with her personal issues at home, however, Joe’s world is plunged into chaos. Meanwhile, Cruz finds herself falling for Amrohi’s daughter, Aaliyah (Stephanie Nur), resulting in all kinds of complications.

Currently, season one of Lioness holds a rating of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics penning mixed reviews. Describing it as an “engrossing story that entwines flat-out action and interpersonal drama”, The Wrap commended the cast on their “strong performances”.

In the case of Empire Magazine, the publication noted: “Despite occasionally stretching plausibility, Taylor Sheridan’s latest event TV series mixes explosive espionage action with domestic issues to mostly absorbing effect.”

Echoing this sentiment, the Daily Telegraph wrote: “It’s an effective action thriller, albeit one that only goes skin deep – there is none of Homeland’s complexity and the dialogue is cheesy in a Top Gun sort of way.”

Ahead of the season one premiere, Saldaña joined Digital Spy for an exclusive interview. Reflecting on Joe’s arc, the actor said: “You meet her right when she’s at the brink of something. You don’t know what it is. But every time you follow her into all of her important environments, you feel that edge, right?

“And that’s exactly what [the creator] Taylor [Sheridan] wanted you to feel for her. And to have that fear like: ‘Is she going to fail? Is she going to fail?’ Because everybody in her environment has that.

“Her husband feels like: ‘Oh my God, you’re not even around’. Her daughter can’t stand her! [laughs] Her mentor [is] always studying her, and she’s being challenged by this new recruit. Everywhere you go, Joe can’t catch a break.”

The first two episodes of Lioness will air on ITV1 at 10.15pm and 11.05pm on Sunday, 7 September. All episodes of season one are available to stream on ITVX.
