Stranger Things star Sadie Sink has addressed the rumours surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe role that she’s playing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (and possibly beyond that).
The actor has been photographed filming for the fourth solo Spidey MCU film, although she’s often been covered up in a big puffer jacket to not give away who she is playing.
“Tom can wave at the fans because people know who he is, but then you get a glimpse of me and I’m like a penguin,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
Sink noted that the secrecy is much more of a big deal in the Marvel world compared to the Netflix show that made her a star, and expects that “That’ll be the situation for a bit”.
In lieu of concrete information, fans are convinced that she will be playing X-Men member Jean Grey/Phoenix, who is a hugely important Marvel character but not connected to Spider-Man (the X-Mansion and Spidey’s friendly neighbourhood are located pretty close to each other, and Spidey dated Kitty Pryde in the Ultimate comics).

“[The rumours were] happening before I even knew that I would be working on this project,” she stated, adding that conversations with Marvel took place during Stranger Things season 5 filming. “I was like, ‘Wait! What are people talking about?'”
One thing that has people convinced she is playing Jean Grey is that fact that both actor and character have red hair, which Sink says doesn’t necessarily hold weight.
“A lot of people forget that hair colour can change, but, yeah, I understand all of the theories,” she added, stating that she’s not paying too much attention to them nowadays.

“People will just have to wait and see. I’m excited for all of it to maybe be put to rest,” she concluded.
Other rumours claim that she is playing fellow redhead and actual Spidey-adjacent character Firestar, or major Spidey character/love interest Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat.
Spider-Man 4 has a release date of 31 July, 2026. The next batch of Stranger Things season 5 episodes will be released on Christmas Day in the US (and early Boxing Day in the UK).
