Spoilers for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man follow.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed that a major character will return in the upcoming sequel series. Announced in October, two new instalments of the crime drama will continue the story, focusing on a new generation of the Shelby family

Set in Birmingham in 1953, the new series will follow on from the Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man, which is set during WWII and stars Barry Keoghan as Tommy Shelby’s son, Duke.

A description of the sequel series reads: “After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel.

“In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”

Speaking about the upcoming series, which will be released on the BBC and Netflix, Knight confirmed that Keoghan’s character Duke will feature.

Asked by Variety if we will be seeing more of Duke in the spin-off, Knight said: “Yes, we are.”

So far, there has been no confirmation on who will star in the upcoming series, and Knight kept the casting under wraps.

Asked if Keoghan would be reprising the role of Duke, Knight replied: “I can’t comment.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Knight opened up about writing Tommy Shelby’s death, saying it took him a while to come up with the idea of Duke being the one to do it.

Asked if he knew how Tommy was going to go out, Knight said: “No, I was trying to work that out. I was having trouble with that one, because Tommy Shelby said in the series the only person who can kill Tommy Shelby is Tommy Shelby. But I didn’t want that to happen. And then it just suddenly became quite clear.”

Knight explained that he decided Duke would be the one to kill Tommy “about a minute” before he wrote the scene.

He continued: “That’s got to be the way it happens. Because it’s about succession and legacy, and Tommy Shelby has always had a very curious relationship with life and death.”

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is now available to watch on Netflix.
