Casualty spoilers follow.
We’re currently counting down the days until the next episode of Casualty, during this scheduled break in the current boxset, ‘Learning Curve’. While there are many questions to be answered in these final two episodes, we’re also looking ahead to the next boxset, which will kick off straight after.
One of the main strengths of Casualty’s current format is that each 12-episode boxset allows different characters to take centre stage. Quite frankly, no cast member feels particularly underutilised and everyone, without exception, has been involved in huge storylines over the last couple of years –which really is no mean feat in the world of soap and continuing drama.
But as we get closer to the all-important 40th anniversary of Casualty later this year, here are five current characters who we want to see in the spotlight in the next run of episodes:
1. Rida Amaan
BBC
Since her horrific ordeal with dodgy surgeon Russell during her time working upstairs in surgery, Rida returned to the ED with a thoroughly deserved promotion. As a Band 6 nurse, Rida was excited for more responsibility in the department, but she has quietly struggled to adjust to the pressures of this new role.
The uncertainty of Holby’s future has taken its toll, and after a tough shift, Rida asked Flynn to put her name on the redundancy list, should the team fail the upcoming inspection. Things got worse when Rida’s bestie Cam was attacked in the most recent episode, and in a particularly powerful scene, she showed Rash that her hair is falling out in clumps due to stress.
Sarah Seggari is truly such an asset to the show, and we’d love there to be more exploration of Rida’s mental health in future episodes as she rises the ranks in the department.
2. Rash Masum
BBC
Speaking of Rash, we haven’t seen much of him at all in this boxset, and he’s had a quiet time of late – except for his brief romance with pharmacist Sunny, which went seriously wrong when it was revealed that she was secretly stealing drugs from the hospital!
As one of the show’s longest-serving current characters, he’s faced plenty of challenges since he joined the ED in 2017. It’s been almost two years since Rash’s harrowing suicide attempt, the climax of an outstanding mental health themed series, and since then he has been getting back on track in both his personal and professional life.
Seeing as Rash is currently on the CESR pathway (the journey to becoming a consultant), it’d be great for him to have a proper storyline of his own soon. Where could this next chapter of his career take him?

3. Flynn Byron
BBC
It’s difficult to believe that Flynn has only been the clinical lead of the ED for just over a year, as Olly Rix has made such an impact in Casualty and it feels like he’s been in the show forever. Flynn’s main role in this boxset has been trying to secure the future of the department, as well as being the main source of support to Siobhan following her devastating attack.
Flynn is now very much part of the team, but we’ve probably only scratched the surface on his life before he arrived in Holby. Last year, Olly told us that they were filming an entire boxset about Flynn’s military past, which “goes an enormous way towards fleshing out an understanding of who this man is.” But with his on the line ahead of the hospital inspection, how long will he be in charge for?
4. Jan Jenning
BBC
As manager of Holby ambulance station, at this point Welsh wonder woman Jan is as iconic to Casualty as paramedic legends like Dixie and Jeff. She has overseen many iterations of the ambulance crew and is always on hand to provide words of wisdom or a shoulder to cry on for her colleagues.
Jan’s at the heart of every paramedic plot, but she hasn’t really had a story of her own since she accompanied her ex-husband Gethin to an assisted dying clinic in Switzerland in 2023 – in one of the show’s most emotional episodes in recent years. It’d be great to see more of her relationship with her nephew Teddy, or a new love interest could be interesting…
5. Indie Jankowski
BBC
Indie is still the newbie in the paramedic team, but it didn’t take long for her to make a strong impression on viewers. It looks like she is here for the foreseeable, as last year she accepted a permanent job at Holby after starting out as a student on placement.
There’s been some exploration of Indie’s family life, when she was reunited with her estranged father Samuel on his release from prison. But her biggest story of late has been her budding romance with Cam, and while it’s a very sweet relationship, we haven’t really seen enough of it to become invested yet. We just want more Indie, as we love her!
Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One and now streams first on BBC iPlayer, where episodes are released at 6am on the day of transmission.
