The Last of Us has just received an update from the boss of HBO, who has addressed whether the upcoming third season will indeed be the last.
Season 2 covered the first half of the second game, and showrunner Craig Mazin previously stated that the show wouldn’t go beyond the source material.
In a new interview with Radio Times, HBO and HBO Max chairman and CEO Casey Bloys reiterated that the main plan is to wrap up with season 3, but the network doesn’t want to close the door on that post-apocalyptic universe completely.

He said: “I believe that’s where Craig is thinking. We always leave the door open, but I believe that’s where he is thinking.”
Mazin’s next project for HBO after The Last of Us is still video game-related, as he plans to adapt Baldur’s Gate, the RPG series set in the Dungeons & Dragons world.
2023’s Baldur’s Gate 3 was a huge critical and commercial success, winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards and Digital Spy’s own Best of 2023 ranking.
Unlike The Last of Us, the show looks like it might be a sequel to the game as opposed to a direct adaptation (which has an incredibly open-ended story).

Bloys continued: “Obviously, [Mazin is] deep into season 3 of The Last of Us – but Baldur’s Gate was something he brought to us.
“He’s very passionate about it, and he’s thinking about it, and we’ve talked about it, but he’s going to focus on The Last of Us, and then come back to [Baldur’s Gate] when he’s got more time.”
The Last of Us airs on Sky Atlantic and streaming services NOW and HBO Max in the UK. The show airs on HBO and streams on HBO Max in the US.
