Wonka co-writer Simon Farnaby has shared an update on the announced sequel to Timothée Chalamet’s musical prequel, which made over $630 million worldwide at the box office when it was released in 2023.
A Variety interview with the Ghosts actor, who co-wrote Wonka with its director Paul King, quotes him as stating that Chalamet “wants to do one, but he’s not sure about timing or what he wants to do next”, and that the film is “delayed indefinitely”.
The piece also quotes a Warner Bros spokesperson, who states that talk of a delay is “entirely false”. So what’s going on?

Well, Farnaby has addressed the confusion, issuing an update on the update via his social media.
“Hi all, just wanted to clear up some rumours about Wonka 2 after my Variety interview, he said. “My quotes were taken little out of context by some people.
“I 100% did not say Wonka 2 wasn’t happening. A sequel was always the plan. Everyone is working really hard on it. WB are committed.
“There is a great script by Paul and I. Timmy wants to do it (like I said!) it’s just about working out schedules and making sure it’s as fantastic as we know it can be — and these things take a little time. Very sorry for any confusion! Good day sirs. Simon X”

Farnaby and the rest of the Ghosts crew will be back on the big screen in October, as the beloved BBC show follows up its five seasons with a movie outing.
Subtitled The Possession of Button House, Farnaby stated that the film is based around “a good idea that we hadn’t done before”.
Meanwhile, next year will see Netflix release Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory, an animated sequel that tells an alternate follow-up story to the classic tale.
Wonka is available to stream now on Netflix in the UK, and on HBO Max in the US.
