Aimee Lou Wood and David Morrissey’s hit BBC comedy series Daddy Issues has shared a big season three update, with new guest stars and confirmation that filming is now under way.

Neil Morrissey, who played the dodgy Detective Constable Nigel Morton in beloved BBC police procedural Line of Duty, is among the new cast additions, along with Sian Gibson (Death Valley, Mandy).

Their characters have also been teased, with Morrissey taking the role of Malcolm’s new friend Ellis, and Gibson being described as “Rita’s unhinged sister Juno”.

Also joining for Daddy Issues’ returning season are Anthony Welsh (Bob Marley: One Love), who is set to play Gemma’s video game designer love interest Avery, as well as Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street, Vera) as new neighbour Odette.

Liam Williams (Back to Life), Sophie Winkleman (Peep Show, Sanditon), and Seb Cardinal (Here We Go) have also been announced.

Daddy Issues centres on Gemma (Aimee Lou Wood) and her dad Malcolm (David Morrissey) who live together, with all sorts of parenting and family drama ensuing.

A synopsis for season three gives fans a glimpse at what to expect for the returning episodes, also revealing that the show will pick up 18 months later.

“Gemma and Malcolm have settled into their own comfortable rhythm,” the description reads. “Sadie is thriving at nursery, and Gemma has been promoted at the salon, but after two weeks away she returns to find Malcolm has lost his keys, the flat has sprung a leak and the police are at the door. So much for having everything under control.”

“It doesn’t take long for ‘old Gemma’ to resurface either”, the synopsis continues. “A promising new romance leaves her caught in a tangled web of lies, and there’s only one person she can turn to: Malcolm, who might finally have become the grown-up she always knew he could be.”

The BBC has also teased that Gemma and Malcolm will face new relationships and “unexpected” surprises in the third season, with even more “outrageous misunderstandings” set to unfold.

Daddy Issues has proven to be a hit with audiences and critics, and still sits with a 100% perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series, penned by Danielle Ward, has been hailed as “delightful” (The Times), “sharp, sweet and incessantly witty” (Evening Standard), and “a warm hug of a show” (Independent).

It was revealed earlier this year that Daddy Issues will conclude with its third season, with Aimee Lou Wood saying at the time: “I’m so happy to be back with David and the brilliant Daddy Issues cast for one final time… Gemma and Malcolm are one of the funniest and sweetest comedy double acts on TV, and I’ve loved being a part of it.”

Daddy Issues will return to the BBC, and seasons 1-2 are streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
