Idris Elba‘s British drama Second Coming has landed a new streaming home in the UK. Released in 2014, the movie tells the story of married couple Jackie and Mark, whose lives are turned upside down by an supposed miracle.

When Jackie discovers she is pregnant, her initial response is confusion. Her stagnant relationship with Mark has meant they haven’t had sex in a while.

Jackie knows that she hasn’t been unfaithful to her husband, leading her to question the surprising turn of events. But when Mark learns about the baby, he struggles to believe his wife’s explanation (or lack thereof).

Directed and written by Debbie Tucker Green, Second Coming holds a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 24 reviews. Critics praised the “unique” and “soulful” plot, which was brought to life by the “wonderful” performances of the leading cast.

“Tucker Green certainly isn’t shy about testing her audience’s patience, and while she can sometimes get a bit too enamored with her own moody, elliptical atmospherics, there’s clearly a unique imagination at work here,” noted Variety.

The Times described the movie as “an enigmatic and quietly impressive piece of storytelling”, while Empire Magazine declared it: “A soulful drama that heralds the arrival of a new voice in British cinema.”

“Tucker Green’s film is more a meditation upon the life-changing effects of pregnancy and the hopes, fears and anxieties that attend any birth,” wrote The Guardian.

“To this end, young Francis Lewis does a wonderful job of hinting at JJ’s only-child fears of an interloper, while Elba captures the disorienting rage of a husband impotently shut out of his partner’s affections with sinewy conviction.

Second Coming is available to stream on Channel 4.
