Crime 101 is based on the book by Don Winslow, which director and co-writer Bart Layton described as a “brilliant story”.

“With his blessing, I went away and wrote a slightly expanded version of his brilliant story,” he told Esquire.
“It had a brilliant superstructure – a great beginning, middle, and end – and was an opportunity to build something that could speak to contemporary ideas about status anxiety and where that can lead you if that becomes one of your primary driving forces.”

The storyline follows Detective Lou Lubesnick as he looks into a series of jewel heists across the Pacific Coast – and while police think it is connected to Colombian cartels, the detective thinks it could be one lone wolf looking for a final score.
Hemsworth, who plays said lone wolf, described his character Davis as “a good guy in a situation doing bad things”.
“There was such a vulnerability to the character that we were trying to explore, in order to have an audience side with him,” he added.
