Generations of members of a community boxing club have set out to give back to their owner to thank him for his decades of work.

The family-owned Trinity Boxing Club was established in Ilkeston in 1975 and offers teen and adult classes for very low prices.

In 1992, Scott Rafferty took over the club and became head coach, providing amateur boxers with support and guidance.

“He is teaching them discipline, respect, hard work and heart, and he is giving everything to the club,” said Ashley Brown, who has set up the fundraiser.

“Boxing changes lives and Scott brings out the best in everybody.”

Trinity Boxing operates as a not-for-profit community club supported by local sponsor MMP Construction Ltd, and the team is working hard to keep membership costs low and to make sure no one is ever turned away due to costs.

The boxers have now set out to give back to the club and raise money through a charity run.

On December 21, past and present group members are set to run from Trinity Boxing Club to the Festival Inn, with the youngest members joining them for the last five kilometres.

“Scott has changed hundreds and hundreds of children’s lives, and we want to make it an annual thing to support him.

“It’s not just about supporting a gym, it’s about investing in the future of Ilkeston’s youth and keeping a positive, inclusive space alive in our town,” Ashley said.

“We hope that by doing this, we can give back to the man who has spent his life giving children a safe space and guidance.”
