The Leader showcased the top 10 finalists, featuring a wide variety of gyms across Wrexham and Flintshire but taking the top spot is Meritor Fitness Club, in Llay, Wrexham.
The win is a great start to the year for owner Mike Irwin, who will celebrate 11 years in business in 2026.
On hearing Meritor Fitness Club had flexed its way to the top spot, he said: “Thanks to everyone who voted for us, we were just surprised to have even made it to the top 10. It’s amazing, brilliant news.”
The 39-year-old believes consistency is key to success at the gym, located on Rackery Lane.
Mike added: “I think one of the reasons we’re popular is we keep the same attitude throughout, using what brought you to the dance.
“And it’s about the community here. We keep our members happy, and they stay.”
Meritor currently has about 1,000 members, ranging in age up to 80-years-old, and a rising number of women joining the gym. And most come through word of mouth and recommendation.
Mike, who also opened a second gym in Saltney about 12 months ago, has constantly invested in the business since the start.
This has seen Meritor grow over the years. Initially starting out in a tiny space, Mike has since moved into a bigger unit, creating zones for specific areas of exercise.
Fully aware that a gym can be a daunting experience, especially for first timers, he has created a welcoming space that people can feel happy enough to ask for advice or help. As well as this, he has installed QR codes on all machines, that show the user a short video on how to use it.
A big believer in giving back, the club also coaches the Llay Welfare Junior Football team.
