The gym combines two passions – exercise and Lego

A new family-run gym has recently opened in the village of Ashby with the ethos of being a welcoming space for anybody. Brick House Gym in 220 High Street was founded by Rebecca and Tommy Coyle and its doors opened for customers on Saturday, January 24.
Since then, they have had more than 20 people sign up as members. Rebecca said, having noticed the decline of the High Street in Scunthorpe, she hoped their small, independent gym could help foster a sense of community in Ashby as well as provide a safe place for people to exercise.
Rebecca said: “The plan is for it to be very community-based. We want to have a safe space for everybody. Everybody trains at different times of the day.
“Nobody has to feel like they are pressured into coming and we want to be able to know all of our members by name and just leave people to it if they don’t want to talk that day.”
Rebecca said membership to Brick House Gym is priced cheaper than many others in the local area. They are opening from 6am until 10pm.

Members can access the gym with an app on their phones and there is 24-hour CCTV. Rebecca said they live just three minutes away, so there is always help at hand.
She said she likes to add personal touches, such as providing a bowl of sweets for gym-goers to help themselves to if they want a pick-me-up.
The gym has free weights and a range of exercise machines for both cardio and strength training. This includes a cross-trainer and a treadmill that can form a steep incline.

Rebecca said their family – Tommy’s two older children from a previous relationship and their daughter – are all “complete Lego dorks” and they love building brick sets together, which served as the inspiration for Brick House Gym’s theme.
She added: “We just build Lego all the time… our house is covered. We have got Lego everywhere. So it just made sense to bring the two things we love most together.”
