Queen’s Park Health and Fitness in St Helens has completed a £225,000 refurbishment, presented by St Helens Borough Council’s leisure service Go Active.
The transformation includes the addition of EGYM, a digital workout system that tailors exercise routines to each user by testing fitness levels and automatically adjusting workouts as members progress.
The system is typically available only in high-end private gyms, but Queen’s Park is now one of just three commercial and council-operated facilities in the North West to offer it.
Councillor Sue Murphy MBE, cabinet member for localities, culture and heritage, said: “We work hard to deliver high-quality sports and leisure facilities that give people in the borough the means and motivation to keep active and healthy.
“This is a great project where we’ve invested from our budget in the public services residents want to see.
“We’ve delivered a complete overhaul of the gym to ensure that all customers have access to the latest equipment and can exercise in a pleasant and welcoming environment.”
EGYM scans the body, determines ideal resistance, and adapts workouts automatically.
The user taps their wristband to the machine, which then sets weight, range of motion, and tempo – removing the guesswork from training.
The gym upgrades include a full suite of new Precor cardio equipment, which features HD consoles for entertainment and fitness content.
The strength area has also been fully modernised with Precor equipment, known for its durability and ergonomic design.
This includes resistance and plate-loaded machines, free weights, racks, cable stations, and equipment like the GluteBuilder.
Kevin Prior from Precor said: “This project brings together world-leading fitness equipment and some of the most advanced training technology available today.
“The integration of Precor and EGYM creates a seamless experience that supports gym users by providing them with the tools needed to deliver consistent, measurable results in an accessible and enjoyable environment.”
The refurbishment aims to support people of all abilities, from beginners and those returning after injury to seasoned gym users.
Residents who are not currently Go Active members can join online through the Go Active website or sign up in person at reception.
The EGYM system is designed to be user-friendly and adaptable, making it especially beneficial for individuals looking for guided workouts.
