Warrington Liberal Democrats had urged the Labour-run council to ‘reconsider its decision not to support’ the new outdoor gym at the site.
The project has been led by Rotary Warrington, working alongside local partners and volunteers. Together they have secured almost £24,000 in funding, including a £20,000 National Lottery grant, to provide exercise equipment that can be used by people of all ages and abilities.
The equipment would help residents improve their health, stay active and enjoy outdoor exercise in a safe and accessible environment.
But the Liberal Democrats said the project was at risk because the council ‘refused’ to take on the annual inspection and maintenance costs of £332.91 plus VAT.
Cllr Sharon Harris, Liberal Democrat, said: “Rotary Warrington and its partners have done an incredible job securing funding for this project. They have shown real commitment to improving health and wellbeing in our community.
“Residents will find it hard to understand why a project that could benefit local people for many years is being held up over a maintenance cost of less than £1 a day.”
Rotary Warrington is celebrating its 100th anniversary next year, and the outdoor gym was intended to be a ‘lasting legacy’ for the people of Warrington.
Cllr Harris added: “This project fits perfectly with the council’s own wellbeing goals. I hope the council will work with Rotary Warrington to find a solution so that this valuable community asset can be delivered for local residents.”
Warrington Liberal Democrats believe community groups that step forward to improve local areas should be supported and encouraged, not left facing ‘unnecessary obstacles’.
In response, the council’s cabinet member for climate change, sustainability and the environment, Cllr Una Gillham, said: “We’re very grateful for the Rotary Club’s efforts in securing funding for a new outdoor gym at Walton Hall and Gardens.
“The ongoing work of our voluntary and community organisations in supporting the health and wellbeing of our local communities is critical.
“As a council, we’re committed to working with our partners to provide collective benefit to our residents.
“We will therefore work closely with the Rotary Club and partners to identify a suitable location for the gym, while also working to collectively agree how the gym can be maintained and looked after once installed. We will be working as quickly as possible to install what will be a welcomed and valued new facility.”
