Peter, 89, had only been inside Pioneer Gym for a matter of moments before the first-day gym anxiety got the better of him.

After walking into the Ouseburn workout spot, he decided to turn around and head back out the door.

This wasn’t before owner Matthew Walker spotted Peter on CCTV and decided to follow him outside, persuading him to have a chat about what he wanted to achieve.

That conversation revealed the real reason the now-regular gym-goer had considered joining in the first place; he wanted to stay fit and independent enough to continue looking after his wife.

Mr Walker said: “Most people aren’t carrying that sort of burden where they’re having to be someone’s full-time carer.

“I thought that at the age of 89 that’s a pretty big responsibility considering it’s just him and his wife that live together – there’s nobody else sort of coming to help them.”

Footage of the moment has gone viral after being shared on social media, raking in over 89,000 likes, and TV presenter Stacey Dooley dubbing it “incredible”.

“The internet is fully rooting for you Peter,” commented one. “89!? He looks incredible, go on Peter lad,” added another.

One other said: “Got me a bit emotional. Glad you went to get him. This is what fitness is really about…being healthy at any age.”

After learning more about Peter’s circumstances, staff tailored a training programme to help improve his strength, mobility and confidence.

Before beginning, Peter underwent an assessment looking at everything from joint mobility to overall strength, allowing coaches to design exercises around his day-to-day needs.

Speaking on the importance of maintaining independence, Mr Walker said: “Something that we’re always wary of when we’re working with older people that their bone density might be a bit lower than what it was previously, so we’ll actively train some things that you need to do day-to-day.”

Since joining, Peter has become a familiar face around the gym, with videos of his workouts attracting attention online and inspiring viewers across the world.

One video, which showed the fitness enthusiast performing push-ups proved particularly popular, but many pointed out his choice of clothes.

Speaking on his newest client’s clothing choices, Mr Walker said: “I think it gained a lot of attention because he was doing push-ups at 89, which is already quite rare, but the fact he was just training in his jeans.”

The gym owner believes Peter’s story highlights the benefit of exercise at any age and could encourage others who may feel intimidated by walking into a gym for the first time.

The video has already seen this encouragement take shape, with one user commenting: “Peter is a true role model.”

Another user took to Instagram to write: “Doing it for his wife! I’m not crying, it’s hay-fever.”

For Pete, the decision to turn around and walk back into Pioneer Gym was never about setting records or building muscles; it was about staying strong enough to continue caring for the person who matters most.
