Look beyond one blood test
Cholesterol deserves attention, but it should not become the only measure of health. A person may have an acceptable LDL level and still face substantial risks from uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure. Another person may need cholesterol-lowering treatment because of previous heart disease or inherited high cholesterol.
The most useful health conversation considers the whole person, including medical history, family history, blood sugar, blood pressure, smoking, diet and physical activity. Medication and lifestyle changes can both play important roles.
As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The lesson here is not to ignore cholesterol, but to understand what the numbers mean before making decisions.
