The closure of the Wiltshire Council-run leisure centre is set to last for six weeks, as council workers hope to add to the improvements already made to the leisure centre in 2024.

Following a previous upgrade of the swimming pool area, changing rooms, and downstairs fitness studio, the next phase of work will see the gym and workout spaces refurbished.

Key improvements will include a reconfigured fitness layout designed to maximise the available space, new flooring and full redecoration of the fitness areas.

A dedicated functional fitness area is set to be built, featuring kettlebells, slam balls, medicine balls, battle ropes and TRX equipment.

On top of this, the free-weight area will be expanded with a squat rack, smith machine, and bench press, and air conditioning will be improved throughout the fitness site.

The closure will begin on Friday, October 31, and the main group exercise studio and squash courts will also be unavailable during the six week period.

Responding to concerns raised online over membership and payment, Wiltshire Council has also confirmed that all regular Lime Kiln gym users will be compensated.

A reduction will be applied to both November and December direct debit payments for members of the leisure centre, and their memberships will continue to be valid at the other 20 council-operated leisure sites across Wiltshire.

Where possible, group exercise classes will be relocated to the sports hall, upstairs function room or downstairs studio and customers will be advised of the changes.

“We’re proud to continue investing in our leisure centres to ensure they remain welcoming, inclusive, and equipped with high-quality facilities,” said Councillor Mel Jacob, cabinet member for communities, engagement and corporate services.

“The improvements at Lime Kiln Leisure Centre will create a more dynamic and accessible fitness environment for everyone, from beginners to seasoned gym-goers.

“We understand the temporary closure may cause some disruption and we thank people for their patience, but we’re confident that the upgraded space will be well worth the wait.

“In the meantime, we encourage members to make use of our other nearby centres and enjoy the flexibility their membership offers.”
