Aging is a journey that should be embraced — not endured.
At The Parkwood, a Sioux Falls luxury 55-plus community, wellness is about more than just living longer — it’s about living better.
“That’s why we’ve made exercise, nutrition and community-focused wellness a central part of our lifestyle offerings,” executive director Nathan Kasselder said.
“Each week, residents can participate in guided classes that support healthy aging, led by certified professionals who understand the unique needs of older adults.”
In August, any adult 55 and older is welcome to explore senior wellness during The Parkwood’s Wellness Thursday series.
Every Thursday at 10 a.m., The Parkwood hosts a 45-minute fitness class led by certified coach Kelly Witt, co-owner of Origin Strength and Origin Nutrition, a local wellness company dedicated to helping people of all ages build strength and adopt healthy, sustainable lifestyles.
Each class is followed by a healthy snack or light meal at 7800 S. Western Ave.
“These classes are open to the public, welcome all fitness levels and offer a great opportunity to experience our vibrant community, connect with other active adults and learn more about life at The Parkwood,” Kasselder said.
Each session is just $10, and space is limited — so be sure to RSVP by calling 605-653-1805.
Here’s a peek at the menu each week:
Aug. 7 – Protein and smoothie bar
Aug. 14 – Eggs, sliced avocado and fresh fruit plate
Aug. 21 – Summer salad with grilled chicken
Aug. 28 – Quinoa bowl with fresh vegetables and seared tuna
“Whether you’re a lifelong exerciser or just getting started, The Parkwood’s wellness program provides the guidance, support and community to help you thrive,” Kasselder said.
Movement with purpose
Physical activity has enormous benefits for seniors — from improving mobility and reducing the risk of falls to enhancing mood, energy levels and independence. But at The Parkwood, fitness isn’t just about movement — it’s about meaningful movement.
Weekly fitness classes are led by Witt, who brings her experience in both fitness and nutrition directly to The Parkwood, offering on-site strength-training classes tailored to seniors. Each session is low-impact, safe and intentionally designed to support the movements of daily life.
As she explains in class:
“We do squats to help residents safely navigate everyday activities — like using the bathroom, showering or getting up from a couch or chair independently.”
“We do box step-ups so you can climb stairs and curbs safely.”
“We deadlift and hinge so you can carry groceries and laundry with a strong back and hips.”
“We practice balance so you’re less likely to fall.”
“The goal is simple: to help residents remain strong, mobile and independent for as long as possible,” Kasselder said. “The results speak for themselves — residents often report feeling less achy, more balanced and more energized after class.”
More than a workout
Witt’s coaching philosophy centers on sustainable daily habits, mindset and accessibility. Whether she’s coaching group classes, providing one-on-one guidance or sharing nutrition tips, her practical, down-to-earth style empowers residents to embrace healthier living at their own pace.
In addition to the physical benefits, these weekly classes offer an important emotional and social boost.
“Residents look forward to seeing familiar faces, sharing a laugh and encouraging each other along the way. This sense of community — combined with the confidence that comes from growing stronger — makes a real difference in overall well-being,” Kasselder said.
“Many participants have found that showing up for a class becomes a bright spot in their week, helping them stay motivated and engaged not just with their health but with life at The Parkwood.”
The benefits of the partnership with Origin Strength go beyond the walls of The Parkwood. The Generations program, held at Origin’s gym, offers twice-weekly, coach-led, strength-training classes tailored for adults age 50 and older. They provide modifications for every fitness level and a welcoming, supportive environment.
“Generations is a great option for seniors in the Sioux Falls area looking to build strength, prevent injury and connect with others who share similar goals. Plus, they offer a free, two-week trial for anyone interested in trying it out,” Kasselder said.
“Kelly and her team offer a strong reminder that age is not a barrier — it’s a season. And with the right support, you can move through that season feeling empowered, strong and well.”
