In a video provided to Bay Area News Group, a police vehicle can be seen in the middle of the intersection, lights on and traffic stopped all around it. Shots begin to ring out.
The shooting intensifies as a plainclothes person emerges from the driver’s seat of the police vehicle and runs 30 to 40 yards away before collapsing.
About three seconds after the person has fallen to the ground, a second police vehicle enters the frame at high speed and drives over the person, a split second after they can be seen moving on the ground.
Dozens more gunshots ring out and the person can no longer be seen moving on the ground as police then move in on the suspect.
In the moments leading up to the video, a San Jose police sergeant used his vehicle to block the suspect, who was in a white car, according to the law enforcement source. The source said the suspect then got out of the car, ran up to the sergeant’s vehicle and opened fire, wounding the sergeant.
The suspect tried to commandeer the police vehicle, but gave up, according to the source.
The officer was taken to an area hospital, the San Jose Police Department said in a social media post. In an update, police said the officer is in critical but stable condition.
