Alysa Liu will skate in front of Bay Area fans in May for the first time since winning her Olympic gold medal when Stars on Ice comes to San Jose.
Liu, who won gold last month at the Milan-Cortina Games, was announced as the annual event’s headliner Tuesday morning. Stars on Ice is scheduled for May 17 at SAP Center.
Joining the 20-year-old Oakland-based star on the matinee are fellow American stars Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito, who competed in the women’s Olympic competition with Liu. The trio jokingly nicknamed themselves the “Blade Angels” in homage to “Charlie’s Angels” (with a nod to the skating comedy “Blades of Glory”).
All three Blade Angels were on the U.S. squad that won gold in team skating in Milan-Cortina last month, and more members of that team will join them in San Jose.
Four-time U.S. champ Ilia Malinin, the “Quad God” known for his quad jumps and his backflips, will skate as part of the event, as well as ice dance duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates.
The tour begins April 16 near Fort Myers, Florida and runs through the end of May, with a date in suburban Memphis.
Liu withdrew this weekend from the World Championships set for later this month in Prague, a move that some Olympic competitors make after the grind of the Games.
She will be honored by the City of Oakland in a special ceremony this Thursday at Frank Ogawa Plaza and has been spotted around the Bay Area since becoming the first American woman in 24 years to win individual Olympic gold.
