The San Jose Sharks have recalled Igor Chernyshov from the Barracuda of the AHL, but he is still on his way to the East Coast, and it remains uncertain if he’ll play in Thursday’s road game against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.
Chernyshov, 20, was in the Barracuda’s lineup on Wednesday night in San Jose and had an assist in the team’s 4-1 win over the San Diego Gulls at Tech CU Arena.
This is Chernyshov’s second recall to the NHL, as he played 15 games with the Sharks from Dec. 16 to Jan. 19 when the team was without forwards Will Smith and Philipp Kurashev. Often playing alongside Macklin Celebrini, Chernyshov had three goals and eight assists as he averaged 15:47 in ice time.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Chernyshov, drafted 33rd overall by the Sharks in 2024, is fourth on the Barracuda in scoring with 33 points in 41 games.
As was planned, Sharks goalie Alex Nedeljkovic will start Thursday’s game, but it remains unclear as to whether Yaroslav Askarov will be able to back up. Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said Askarov “tweaked something” during the Sharks’ morning skate in Boston, putting his availability for Thursday’s game in question.
Warsofsky said he believed Askarov’s injury was minor. The Sharks would likely have to use an emergency backup goalie if Askarov were unavailable. In December, with Askarov battling an illness on a road trip, the Sharks signed former Colgate University goalie Justin Kowalkoski to an amateur tryout contract to back up Nedeljkovic in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Kowalkoski did not play in what became a 4-1 Sharks loss.
Warsofsky added that forward William Eklund’s availability for Thursday’s game will be determined closer to game time. Eklund did not practice on Wednesday due to a lower-body injury, but took part in line rushes during Thursday’s morning skate. Eklund is the Sharks’ fifth-leading scorer this season with 38 points in 58 games.
The Sharks (30-26-6) are playing the second game of a five-game road trip that began with a 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
San Jose has won just three of its last 11 games (3-5-3) and is 0-1-2 in its last three. With 66 points, the Sharks entered Thursday one point behind the Seattle Kraken for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.
The Sharks have lost five straight on the road and are playing a Bruins team that has won 13 straight at home, including a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Boston (36-22-6) enters Thursday in the Eastern Conference’s second wild card spot with 78 points, two points ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Sharks’ road trip continues with games against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, and the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
