SAN JOSE — A man died early Saturday after being struck by a vehicle, authorities said.

The man had been riding a bicycle around 2:30 a.m. in the area of Coleman Avenue and Hedding Street when he was struck by a blue 2023 Tesla sedan driven by an adult male, according to a press release from the San Jose Police Department.

The Tesla, northbound on Coleman, was approaching Hedding at high speed and struck the bicyclist as he was crossing the street south of the intersection, authorities said. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

Emergency responders pronounced the victim deceased at the scene, authorities said. His identity will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office.

The unoccupied suspect vehicle was located away from the scene with the help of automated license plate reader cameras.

The suspect later returned to the site of the crash and appeared to be under the influence, authorities said. The driver was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail.

This incident marks San Jose’s fifth traffic death and fifth fatal collision of the year.
