SAN JOSE — An affordable housing development near downtown San Jose is making progress following the completion of a real estate deal involving Santa Clara County.

The county bought land where a developer intends to build an eight-story housing project known as Algarve Apartments at 1135 East Santa Clara St., documents on file with the County Recorder’s Office show.

The project would include 91 affordable homes at the corner of East Santa Clara Street and North 24th Street, documents on file with San Jose city planners show.

Of the 91 units, 24 would be set aside for military veterans and 36 as permanent supportive housing for those who have experienced homelessness, Abode Housing states on its website.

The precise timeline for the development wasn’t immediately clear, but construction crews have cleared away a considerable portion of the project site.

The state’s Project Homekey+ program awarded $41 million for Algarve Apartments, which represented the largest public funding amount ever received for an Abode development, according to the company.

A growing number of affordable housing projects appear to be making progress in the downtown San Jose area as their proponents attempt to navigate the city approval process.

In at least one case, the developer of an affordable housing project is seeking speedy approval of the complex by using provisions of California Senate Bill 35, which forces cities to approve and expedite certain projects that include affordable units.
