Will 2026 be the year that the Bay Area restaurant scene breaks its three-year-long awards drought at the “Oscars of the food world?” A handful of candidates remain in contention on Tuesday morning, following the James Beard Foundation announcing its 2026 shortlist for its prestigious restaurant and chef awards.

San Francisco’s bar circuit is represented in two categories: Longtime rum bar Smuggler’s Cove is up for the Outstanding Bar award, Kevin Diedrich of Pacific Cocktail Haven for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service.

The James Beard Foundation released this year’s awards long list in January, sparking hopes that the Bay Area restaurant world, which went empty handed at the 2023, 2024 and 2025 awards galas, could finally see some winners. Notable semifinalists that did not make the final cut include the Happy Crane, in the best new restaurant category; House of Prime Rib, in the outstanding hospitality category; and the Valley Club, in the best new bar category.

The James Beard Foundation will announce the restaurant and chef award winners at a ceremony on June 15 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
