A San Jose man who allegedly ran away from a fatal crash early Saturday near Moss Landing was arrested after a drone spotted him, the California Highway Patrol said.

One person was killed and three injured in the head-on collision around 12:45 a.m. April 4 on Salinas Road (Highway 1). A northbound BMW sedan believed to have been driven by a 25-year-old San Jose man crossed into the southbound lane and struck a Ford SUV, the CHP’s Monterey unit said.

When officers arrived, they found the SUV’s driver — its sole occupant — had suffered fatal injuries. There was one injured man in the BMW; he was not thought to have been driving.

A drone operated by Monterey County sheriff’s deputies found two men in a field, believed to be the BMW’s driver and a passenger. Both had been injured.

The suspected driver was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The identity of the SUV’s driver has not been released.

It was the second fatal crash in northern Monterey County within five hours, the CHP said. Around 8 p.m. Friday, a 16-year-old boy was killed when a car in which he was riding hit a tree off Meridian Road, northeast of Castroville.

The alleged driver, a 37-year-old Castroville man, was injured, as were two other passengers, boys ages 7 and 14.  DUI was suspected, the CHP said.
