A weekend party inside an abandoned South Bay movie theater ended with about 100 minors being detained, authorities said.
Calls came in to dispatch at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, with tipsters reporting that people were entering the long-shuttered Burbank Theater on South Bascom Avenue, with alcohol in hand.
Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find a theater door ajar, and young people both inside and on the building’s roof, according to multiple media reports.
Authorities made announcements that the partygoers were trespassing and called for them to exit the building, the reports said. Given the large crowd, the sheriff’s office set up an incident command post at Bascom and Parkmoor avenues.
Deputies had the juveniles sit on a sidewalk, while they waited for their parents or guardians to pick them up, according to the reports.
Authorities did not announce any arrests but did say the youths were admonished and told not to come back to the theater.
Opened in 1949, the Burbank Theater is on the county’s history buildings list but not designed as a landmark. For years, it operated as an “adult theater” until authorities in 2001 forced its closure and charged the owners with maintaining a public nuisance, unfair business practices and building code violations.
