SAN JOSE — A San Jose housing development consisting of apartments for school district workers is poised for a final city review that would clear the way for the complex.

The project at 2050 Kammerer Ave. would produce 78 homes, city planning files show. The rentals would be made available to teachers and staff of Alum Rock Union Elementary School District.

Half of the units will be reserved for lower-income households, planning documents show. The remaining 50%, while intended to be offered at below-market rates, will not be deed-restricted.

San Jose city staffers are slated to make a final decision before the end of May regarding a ministerial permit that would be the final step in the municipal approval process, according to a city planner’s email to this news organization.

The development is slated to consist of three buildings, each three stories high, that would be grouped around a central landscaped 1-acre common area. Real estate firm Core Builders is also involved in the project.

A 720-square-foot amenities building also is being planned, according to the proposal.

The development would be next to the demolished location of an abandoned youth center that burned down in August 2025.

The project site is also adjacent to Renaissance Academy at Mathson middle school, which isn’t part of development plans and will remain after the housing is built.

The construction timeline wasn’t immediately known.

Backers of the proposal intend to use provisions of Senate Bill 330, a California law that was crafted to expedite residential projects by curbing the ability of city and county government agencies to limit housing development.
