Spring Symphony
Symphony San Jose celebrates spring with three orchestral works: Dvořák’s “Carnival Overture,” Mason Bates’ “Philharmonia Fantastique” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (Pastorale).
Bates’ concerto is set to an animated film in which a magical animated sprite leads the audience on a tour inside the instruments of the orchestra.
Performances are Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 10, at 2:30 p.m. at the California Theatre, 345 S. First St. in downtown San Jose. Symphony San Jose promises a little something special for its Mother’s Day audience.

Neighborhood Notes
ALMADEN>>Two students from the San Jose Unified School District earned medals at the 2026 SkillsUSA California State Leadership and Skills Conference from April 9-12 in Ontario, CA.
They were among 14 teams and individual students from Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) to earn a medal at the conference. Almost 140 SVCTE students competed in the annual event, which brings together more than 4,000 of the state’s top career technical education competitors.
The conference featured more than 120 contests spanning skilled trades, technical fields and leadership development. Students applied what they’ve learned in the classroom to hands-on, real-world scenarios that mirror industry expectations.
Leland High School student Isabel Zuck was on a team that took a silver medal in the Career Pathways: Industrial Engineering category. Pioneer High School student Kai Carter earned a gold medal in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning category.
“Taking HVAC at SVCTE helped me in every way,” Carter said in a release. “Before this class, I knew nothing. I had a bit of electrical knowledge, but this class prepared me for everything in the competition.”
