Discovering art

Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose is looking for its next artist-in-residence. Applications are open through May 25 at https://www.cdm.org/artist-in-residence-application.

Artists-in-residence create and facilitate monthly hands-on art programs for children of all ages who visit the museum’s LeRoy Neiman Art Studio on the weekends. The selected artist will receive $1,700-$2,125 a month for the 17- to 18-week program, plus a stipend for art supplies.

The artist will have the opportunity to display their own artwork in the museum’s gallery. Each artist will receive promotion on the museum’s marketing channels and a portfolio of their museum work in photos and video to take with them after their residency is complete.

ROSE GARDEN>>Student productions at Lincoln High School and Bellarmine College Preparatory are nominees for this year’s Rita Moreno Awards, as are students from both schools.

Sponsored by Broadway San Jose and Children’s Musical Theater San Jose, the  regional awards competition recognizes outstanding achievement in high school musical theater from San Mateo County down to Kern County in Southern California. This year, 42 productions from 30 schools across 18 counties were submitted, with 382 students evaluated for their individual performances.

The nominees will compete in front of a panel of judges on Monday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Among those taking the stage will be cast members from Lincoln’s production of “Be More Chill” and Bellarmine’s “A Chorus Line: Teen Edition,” both nominated for Best Overall Production.

Also performing will be Izaiah Guttierez and Lyra Ramayrat from Lincoln, who are nominated for best lead actor and actress, respecitively, for their roles in “Disney’s The Little Mermaid.”

Charlotte Hunter was nominated as Best Supporting Performer for her turn as Chef Louis in “Disney’s The Little Mermaid,” and Henry Larson, who played Zach in “A Chorus Line: Teen Edition,” is also in the running for that award.

Winners in the Lead Actor and Lead Actress categories will travel to New York City for the 17th annual Jimmy Awards ceremony, where they will make their debuts on a Broadway stage alongside 114 other students from around the country and vye for awards and scholarships June 12-23.
