SAN JOSE — A 38-year-old San Jose man who admitted to possessing nearly 1,000 files of child pornography has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison, prosecutors said.
David Alvarez was indicted on July 31, 2024, and pleaded guilty on June 26, 2025, to one count of possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Alvarez admitted to possessing five electronic devices that he knew contained around 960 files of child pornography, prosecutors said, citing his plea agreement.
In addition, he admitted to distributing child pornography to others and generating screen recordings of video chat sessions where he played his collection for 70 different people, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors said Alvarez also exchanged messages that were sexual in nature with a person who told him he was 15 years old. Alvarez solicited pictures from the minor, who sent him a nude picture, and Alvarez in turn sent the minor images of his own genitalia.
Last week, U.S. District Judge William Orrick sentenced Alvarez to 66 months in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release. Alvarez was also ordered to pay restitution to one of his victims.
Alvarez is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on July 10, according to prosecutors.
